Hardware and Software Development of a System for Experimental Detection of Sloshing Height in a Container

Project Description

The project aims to develop a system to detect the height of liquid movement (sloshing) in partially filled containers using ultrasonic sensors integrated with an Arduino board. The goal is to improve current methods, such as using GoPro cameras, by installing multiple sensors to detect height at different planes, useful for 2D/3D motions and non-transparent containers.

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of 3D design
  • Basic programming knowledge
  • Fundamentals of signals and measurements
  • Problem-solving skills and initiative

Not required but good to have

  • Basic electronics and microcontroller knowledge (e.g., Arduino)
  • Familiarity with MATLAB

Target Objectives

  • Data Acquisition: collect data from proximity sensors using Arduino (microcontroller).
  • Experimental setup Design: Create a compact design for sensor placement and microcontroller support.
  • Data Analysis and Visualisation: MATLAB is used for data analysis and visualisation.
  • Experimental Testing
  • System Extension: extend the system for application to 2D/3D motions.
  • Application to Different Containers: apply the system to various containers, such as rectangular ones.

Expected Results

  • Development of a Complete Detection System: create a hardware and software system for detecting sloshing height.
  • Experimental Validation: verify the system’s effectiveness through experimental tests.
